Commissioning Engineer

Location: UK (with site travel as required)
Contract Length: 6 Months
Rate: £50-£60 per hour (Outside IR35)
Start Date: ASAP

Overview:

We're supporting a leading special purpose machinery manufacturer within the packaging sector who are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to join their team on a 6-month contract basis. The successful engineer will take ownership of machine commissioning activities, both in-house and on customer sites, ensuring reliable and efficient system performance through to handover.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead commissioning of automated and special purpose packaging machinery from build through to customer acceptance.

• Conduct testing, fault-finding, and optimisation of mechanical, electrical, and control systems.

• Collaborate with design, electrical, and software teams to ensure machines meet performance specifications.

• Support installation and integration at customer sites, both UK and overseas (as required).

• Produce and maintain commissioning documentation, test reports, and FAT/SAT records.

• Provide technical support during trials, ramp-up, and early production phases.

• Identify and implement improvements to enhance reliability and performance.

• Ensure all work is carried out safely and in compliance with site and customer requirements.

Key Skills & Experience:

• Proven background commissioning special purpose machinery, ideally within packaging, automation, or process equipment environments.

• Strong multidisciplinary understanding - mechanical, electrical, and control systems.

• Experience with PLC/HMI systems (Siemens, Allen Bradley, or similar) advantageous.

• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, and control logic.

• Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills under time constraints.

• Excellent communication and customer-facing skills.

• Willingness to travel to client sites when required.

Desirable Experience:

• Experience within the food & beverage, pharmaceutical, or FMCG industries.

• Knowledge of CE marking, PUWER, and relevant safety standards.

• Hands-on experience in machine installation and validation processes.
