Senior Embedded Hardware Security Engineer

The Role

A Senior Embedded Hardware & Security Engineer is required to support an R&D programme focused on secure embedded hardware for Linux-based edge devices.

The project involves developing a hardware security and post-quantum cryptography demonstrator incorporating FPGA/SoC technology, hardware-derived device identity, secure key management and cryptographic acceleration.

The role will cover the development lifecycle from architecture and development boards through to prototype PCB design, hardware bring-up, software integration and hardware-in-the-loop testing.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop embedded electronic hardware and custom PCBs

• Component selection, schematic capture and PCB development

• Prototype hardware bring-up, debugging and testing

• Integrate FPGA/SoC platforms, TPMs, secure elements and security IP

• Develop embedded C/C++, firmware, device drivers and Linux interfaces

• Work with SPI, I²C, UART, USB, Ethernet and potentially PCIe

• Implement bootloaders, secure boot and hardware roots of trust

• Integrate cryptographic libraries, OpenSSL and PKCS#11

• Support secure key management and device authentication

• Work with post-quantum cryptography, including ML-KEM and ML-DSA

• Carry out HIL testing, security verification and threat modelling

• Produce technical documentation, schematics and test evidence

Required Experience

• Embedded hardware/electronics engineering

• Custom PCB design and hardware bring-up

• Embedded C/C++ and Linux

• ARM, RISC-V or FPGA/SoC platforms

• Hardware security and cryptography

• Secure boot, TPMs, secure elements or hardware roots of trust

• SPI, I²C, UART, USB and Ethernet

• Hardware debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analysers and JTAG

FPGA integration experience is desirable, but deep RTL development is not essential. A traditional cybersecurity background is not required where there is strong embedded/electronics experience combined with relevant cryptographic knowledge.
