Control Systems Engineer

Reading 50K - 60K Permanent

About the Role

A leading Mechanical and Electrical contractor, specialising in control systems for process control, automation, and telemetry primarily within the water industry, is seeking a Control Systems Engineer.

Your Role

The Control Systems Engineer will take ownership and be responsible for the full life cycle delivery of projects in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner, with a strong focus on quality and customer satisfaction. The role involves working on specialist projects mainly within the UK Utilities sector and requires a committed, flexible, and proactive attitude.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting site surveys and producing clear, detailed reports.

  • Creating detailed and professional functional design specifications (FDS).

  • Developing, configuring, and modifying bespoke programs for PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems.

  • Preparing and delivering Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Customer FATs (CFAT), and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) reports.

  • Producing Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).

  • Performing on-site installation, testing, fault finding, and commissioning.

  • Managing project-related correspondence, plans, deliverables, and documentation.

  • Supporting team members in project delivery and training.

Projects vary in size and complexity, providing continuous challenges. This role will help expand project capacity and enable the tendering of larger contracts. Mentoring less experienced team members is an important part of this position.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about success, eager to learn and adapt, and flexible in handling daily tasks. The role supports business commitments, reputation growth, and fosters an environment open to new ideas and initiative.

Essential Requirements

  • Experienced in Industrial Automation, specifically Allen Bradley PLC ladder logic and FTView HMI, with solid knowledge of process control techniques.

  • Strong commissioning skills, ensuring safe project delivery with minimal disruption to surrounding processes. (Site work may involve occasional travel and overnight stays.)

  • Electrical awareness, working safely around electrical panels and equipment.

  • Attention to detail, ensuring all documentation and visualisations (e.g., HMI) are clear, accurate, and professionally presented. PLC code should be well structured, labelled, and functional.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, capable of resolving technical and non-technical issues to meet business and client expectations.

  • Effective communication skills to liaise professionally with colleagues, clients, and contractors.

  • Good written English for producing clear, professional documents.

  • Ability to self-manage and lead projects to completion.

  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.

  • Good computer literacy and IT skills.

  • Willingness and ability to train others.

  • Valid UK Driving License.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix, and SLC PLCs.

  • Knowledge of WonderWare Achestra System Platform & InTouch HMI.

  • Experience with industrial networking protocols (Profibus, DeviceNet, Modbus, ControlNet, TCP/IP, fibre, etc.).

  • Familiarity with Iconics (Genesis 32 and 64).

  • Instrumentation experience (level, pressure, flow sensors, variable speed drives, etc.).

  • Electrical experience with control panels and MCCs, including fault finding, repair, and modification.

  • Experience with other PLCs and HMIs (Siemens, Mitsubishi, etc.) and SCADA configuration tools (Iconics, Schneider Clear SCADA, etc.).

  • Ability to read and produce electrical drawings.

  • Water industry experience is a plus.

Up-to-date training certificates and qualifications are preferred.

Additional Information

  • Company vehicle, laptop, and mobile phone provided.

  • Working hours: 07:30 - 16:00, Monday to Friday.

  • 20 days annual leave plus bank holidays (rising to 25 days after 5 years' service).

  • Auto-enrolment pension scheme.
